Smoke Testing

Why is Smoke Testing Done?

Leaks in a sewer system create two problems.

First, sewage and gases may leak out of and escape the system, contaminating the surrounding land area and possibly creating health hazards.

Secondly, storm and ground water may leak into the system diminishing the capacity of the already stressed system to collect, convey, and treat sewage.

Therefore, Smoke Testing is done to find leaks in both the District's sewer main and the District customer's private lateral lines and plumbing systems. Any smoke leakage is an indication that leaks exist.
